About the Book

The book Flora of Lakshadweep Islands is a comprehensive taxonomic account of the flowering plants of the Lakshadweep archipelago. The project was initiated in 2008 by Dr. M. Sanjappa, along with Dr. P. Lakshminarsimhan and Dr. Arti Garg of the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Kolkata. After several years of interruption, the work gained momentum after 2020 and was successfully completed. The book documents 475 angiospermous taxa, comprising 472 species and four infraspecific taxa, including two subspecies and two varieties, as reported in the account. These plants belong to 308 genera and 97 families. The flora includes 362 dicotyledonous species and two varieties, representing 242 genera and 75 families. 7. It also covers 114 monocotyledonous species and two subspecies, belonging to 67 genera and 22 families. The account is based on plant specimens collected during field surveys in 2008–2009 and records published by earlier botanists since 1890. It provides updated scientific nomenclature, local names wherever available, flowering and fruiting periods, reported uses, and details of examined specimens. Identification keys are provided for families, genera, species, and infraspecific taxa to facilitate accurate plant identification. The book contains 290 original coloured field photographs, 23 text figures illustrating different regions of the islands, and six tables. Detailed descriptions of genera and species make it a valuable reference for understanding the botanical diversity of Lakshadweep. It also supports taxonomic research, species identification, and the study of plant distribution in the island ecosystem. The work acknowledges the contributions of field photographers, local island staff, and herbarium personnel who assisted in its preparation. Overall, Flora of Lakshadweep Islands is an important scientific contribution for researchers, academicians, students, foresters, and all those interested in the flora and biodiversity of Lakshadweep.
