About the Book

In an era defined by rapid technological mediation, how is the very essence of “childhood” being restructured? This definitive collection offers a critical interrogation of the digital ecologies that shape contemporary learning, identity, and social representation. Digital Childhoods: Media, Learning and Representation in Contemporary Society brings together a diverse range of perspectives to examine the multifaceted relationship between young people and digital infrastructure in India. As digital platforms transition from being mere tools to becoming the primary environments for socialization, this volume explores the tension between empowerment and surveillance, the evolution of digital literacy, and the shifting paradigms of pedagogical practice. Through a rigorously edited collection of scholarly essays, editors Sayan Dey and V. Ratnamala curate a dialogue that transcends traditional media studies. The contributors analyze how children navigate algorithmic agency, the commercialization of digital play, and the nuances of representation in virtual spaces. By centering the voices and experiences of the digitally native, this book provides an essential resource for scholars, educators, and policymakers seeking to understand the socio-cultural complexities of growing up in a networked world.
